A two-stage packer and method for sealing an annulus in a wellbore is provided. The packer may be set by a force which will not cause a sealing element to buckle, collapse, or otherwise fail. In one aspect, the packer (100) comprises a body (102) having a sealing element (300) and shoulder (400) disposed there-around, and a slidable member (200) slidably arranged on the body, the slidable member having a first surface (233) disposable beneath the element to increase the inner diameter thereof and a second surface disposable against an end of the element to increase the outer diameter thereof. The method comprises running a body into the wellbore, the body comprising a sealing element and a slidable member slidably disposed there-around, wherein the slidable member comprises a first surface and a second surface; forcing the first surface beneath the element to increase the inner diameter thereof; and forcing the second surface against an end of the element to increase the outer diameter thereof.
La présente invention concerne un packer à deux étages et un procédé qui permet de sceller hermétiquement un espace annulaire dans un trou de forage. Le packer de l'invention peut être installé par une force qui ne provoque pas le fléchissement, l'effondrement ou toute autre défaillance de l'élément d'étanchéité. Dans un de ses aspects, le packer de l'invention (100) comprend un corps (102) comportant un élément d'étanchéité (300) et un épaulement (400) disposé autour du corps, et un organe coulissant (200) agencé coulissant sur le corps, lequel organe coulissant possède une première surface (233) qui peut être placée sous l'élément afin d'augmenter le diamètre interne de ce dernier et une seconde surface qui peut être placée contre une extrémité de l'élément afin d'augmenter le diamètre extérieur de ce dernier. Le procédé de l'invention consiste à : descendre un corps dans le trou de forage, le corps comprenant un élément d'étanchéité et un organe coulissant disposé coulissant autour du corps, et l'organe coulissant comprenant une première surface et une seconde surface ; pousser la première surface sous l'élément précité afin d'augmenter le diamètre intérieur de ce dernier ; et pousser la seconde surface contre une extrémité de l'élément afin d'augmenter le diamètre extérieur de ce dernier.
