The invention is directed to a two-stage, all-electric injection unit (14). More specifically, an injection unit (14) in which the feed screw (30) is preferably used only for plastication and the injection of the plasticized material is accomplished by a separate accumulator (20) having an electrically driven linear actuator, such as a ball screw mechanism (62). The plunger (34) of the accumulator (20) is configured with a helical flight (36) and is rotatable by means of a one-way clutch (86) interposed between the plunger (34) and the ball screw.
