ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A two-stage process for producing gamma- mercaptopropyltrialkoxysilane which comprises reacting beta-cyanoethyltrialkoxysilane with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of an amide to form a novel gamma-trialkoxysilylthiopropionamide intermediate followed by reducing said intermediate with hydrogen in the presence of a transition metal polysulfide.
