A technique of producing polyolefin foam is described. A two-stage process is described wherein the first stage involves expanding a preformed cylindrical tube comprising a polymer, blowing agent, cross-linking agent and blowing agent activator in an enclosed cylindrical mould. The cylindrical mould constrains the expansion of the foam without the need for hydraulic rams or similar mechanical means as are found in conventional platen presses. Following stage one, the cylindrical tubes of material are heated while unconstrained and expands symmetrically. The cylindrical tube of expanded foam material is then slit and may be cold pressed in order to form polyolefin foam blands. Variations on the cylindrical tube mould shape may be used and patterns and other features may be formed on the interior of the cylindrical mould in order to produce a product containing the imprint thereof. Polyolefin foam so produced may be used in building, packaging, clothing and similar applications.

Technique de production de mousse polyoléfinique. On a mis au point un procédé à deux étapes dans lequel la première étape consiste à réaliser l'expansion dans un moule cylindrique fermé d'un tube cylindrique préformé comportant un polymère, un agent gonflant, un agent réticulant et un activateur pour l'agent gonflant. Le moule cylindrique limite l'expansion de la mousse de manière à rendre superflus les vérins hydrauliques ou autres organes mécaniques que l'on trouve dans les presses à plateaux traditionnelles. A la suite de la première étape, on chauffe les tubes cylindriques de matière non confinés afin de provoquer l'expansion symétrique de ceux-ci, puis on pratique une fente dans le tube cylindrique de mousse expansée et on peut le soumettre au pressage à froid afin de former des ébauches en mousse polyoléfinique. On peut moduler la forme du moule à tube cylindrique, et on peut former des motifs et d'autres reliefs sur la face interne du moule cylindrique afin de produire un produit portant une empreinte correspondante. La mousse polyoléfinique ainsi obtenue est utilisable dans les domaines de la construction, de l'emballage, de l'habillement ou analogue.
