ABSTRACT In the treatment of shale oil contaminated with particulate shale solids and metals, such as iron and arsenic, a close-coupled two-stage hydroprocessing of the oil is performed by (a) contacting said contaminated shale oil with hydrogen in a hydrothermal treating zone to form a product which still contains shale solids and metals, and (b) catalytically hydroprocessing the product by passing the product through the hydroprocessing zone with hydrogen gas in upflow relationship to the catalyst of the hydroprocessing zone.
