This invention relates to a two step process for sweetening a sour hydrocarbon fraction containing tertiary mercaptans and primary or secondary mercaptans. In one step the mercaptans in the sour hydrocarbon fraction are reacted with hydrogen in the liquid phase and in the presence of a selective hydrogenolysis catalyst to selectively hydrogenolyse the tertiary mercaptans. Inanother step, the primary and/or secondary mercaptans are oxidized by reacting them with an oxidizing agent in the presence of oxidation catalyst and a basic component. The selective hydrogenolysis step and the oxidation step may be carried out in any order, i.e., either hydrogenolysis first followed by oxidation or vice versa.

Cette invention traite d'un procédé à deux étapes de désulfuration d'une fraction acide d'hydrocarbures contenant des mercaptans tertiaires et des mercaptans primaires et secondaires. Dans une première étape, les mercaptans de la fraction acide sont amenés à réagir avec l'hydrogène dans la phase liquide et en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydrogénolyse sélective afin d'hydrogénolyser sélectivement les mercaptans tertiaires. Dans une autre étape, les mercaptans primaires et(ou) secondaires sont oxydés par réaction avec un agent oxydant en présence d'un catalyseur d'oxydation et d'un composé basique. L'étape d'hydrogénolyse sélective et celle de l'oxydation peuvent s'effectuer dans n'importe quel ordre, c.-à-d. l'hydrogénolyse en premier, suivie de l'oxydation ou l'inverse.
