An internal combustion engine (11) comprises an engine block (13) having a cylinder (17), a cylinder head (21) fixed to the block and a piston (31), defining a combustion chamber (51). The piston face (37) has a bowl (39) with a cylindrical wail (41) extending about an axis (43) inclined in relation to the cylinder axis (19). A fuel injector nozzle (55) is mounted in the cylinder head (21) at an inclined angle to the cylinder axis (19) and a spark plug (71) is mounted at an inclined angle to the cylinder axis (19) on the opposite side of the cylinder (17) from the fuel injector nozzle (55). Fuel injected into the combustion chamber (51) is reflected by the bowl (39) in the direction of the spark plug (71).
