The present invention is directed to an improved multi-layer golf ball (2, 4) comprising a core (10, 20), an inner cover layer (14, 24) and an outer cover layer (16, 26). The inner cover layer (14, 24) is comprised of a relatively hard cover material. The outer cover layer (16, 26) is comprised of a soft, very low modulus ionomer or ionomer blend, or non-ionomeric thermoplastic elastomer such as polyurethane, polyester or polyesteramide. The outer cover layer (16, 26) exhibits a Shore D hardness of less than 50D. The golf ball (2, 4) may further comprise an optional mantle layer (22), which may include one or more filler materials. Filler material may be incorporated in one or more of the core (10, 20), inner cover layer (14, 24), or outer cover layer (16, 26). The resulting multi-layered golf ball (2, 4) of the present invention exhibits reduced slippage between the ball and club face, and therefore, relatively high spin rates.
