A fast magnetic resonance whole body imaging method and apparatus. In each of one or more repetition intervals, after an initial NMR RF (90°) nutation pulse a sequence of (180°) RF nutation pulses is used to refocus the RF response into a corre- sponding train of spin echoes (S2, S5, S8). During the time that the spin echoes would normally occur after each (180°) RF pulse, an alternating polarity read-out gradient is applied so as to form a sub-sequence of gradient echoes (S1,S3,S4,S6,S7,S9). Non- contiguous K-space trajectories of the acquired data are interleaved.
