Disclosed is an ultrafine zinc oxide particle having IR-shielding properties, conductivity and visible light transmittance. Also disclosed is a process for producing the particle. The ultrafine zinc oxide particle comprises an element having a valency of 3 or higher, has a metal compound adhered on its surface, and has an average primary particle diameter of 0.1 µm or less.
