A carbon/carbon composite in which a carbon matrix containing a controlled amount of boron or a boron compound is reinforced with carbon fiber exhibits a low coefficient of friction, i.e., on the order of 0.04 to 0.1 at temperatures up to 600~C, which is one of the lowest frictional coefficients for any type of carbonaceous material, including graphite, glassy carbon, diamond, diamond- like carbon and other forms of carbon material. The high degree of slipperiness of the carbon composite renders it particularly adapted for limiting friction and wear at elevated temperatures such as in seals, bearings, shafts, and flexible joints.

Cette invention se rapporte à un composite carbone/carbone, dans lequel une matrice de carbone contenant une quantité régulée de bore et un composé au bore est renforcée par des fibres de carbone et qui possède un faible coefficient de friction, c'est-à-dire de l'ordre de 0,04 à 0,1 à des températures allant jusqu'à 600 ·C, ce qui constitue l'un des coefficients de friction les plus bas pour n'importe quel type de matériau au carbone, y compris le graphite, le carbone vitreux, le diamant, le carbone de type diamant et d'autres formes de matériau au carbone. Le degré élevé de pouvoir glissant de ce composite au carbone le rend particulièrement adapté pour limiter la friction et l'usure à des températures élevées, par exemple dans des joints d'étanchéité, des paliers, des arbres et des assemblages flexibles.
