At least one UV sterilizing light source, such as a UV light bulb is positioned within a water reservoir of a water cooler for providing sterilization of water with the water cooler. Preferably the water cooler is adapted to accept water delivered from top loaded inverted water bottles. In a first configuration, the water cooler has an external evaporator that is wound around the outside diameter of the cold water tank. In a second configuration, the water cooler has an internal evaporator that is placed inside of the cold water tank. In the tank with an external evaporator, the UV light bulb and glass cover may be made longer than the UV light bulb used with the tank having an internal evaporator. In order to increase the length of the engagement between the bulb and the water in the cooler, preferably the level of the water is raised to a higher level than it is normally used in typical cold water tanks.
