An ultra-wide bandwidth optical amplifier (10) for the 1550nm optical band divides the 1520nm-1610nm bandwidth into three narrow bandwidths, i.e. C1(1520nm-1541nm), C2(1541nm-1565nm) and L(1565nm-1610nm), and uses three separate erbium doped fiber amplifier blocks (12, 14, 16), configured in parallel relation and individually optimized to separately amplify the respective bandwidth. Multipath interference is controlled by constructing all three amplifier blocks with the same optical transmission length. The C1 and C2 band amplifier blocks (12, 14), which include shorter erbium doped fibers (44, 52) than the L band amplifier block (16), are physically lengthened using lengths of single mode fiber (70, 72) so that the optical transmission path of each amplifier block is generally equal. Amplifier blocks (12, 16) further include delay control devices (74, 76) which selectively delay signals passing through the respective amplifier block (12, 16) to provide fine adjustment to signal recombination.

L'invention concerne un amplificateur (10) optique à bande ultralarge, car la bande optique de 1550nm divise la bande 1520nm-1610nm en trois bandes étroites, à savoir C1(1520nm-1541nm), C2(1541nm-1565nm) et L(1565nm-1610nm), et utilise trois unités séparées d'amplificateurs à fibre dopée à l'erbium (12, 14, 16) (EDFA), aménagés en parallèle et optimisés individuellement pour amplifier séparément la bande respective. On règle les problèmes de brouillage dans la propagation par trajets multiples en dotant les trois unités d'amplificateurs de la même longueur de transmission optique. Les unités d'amplificateurs de bande C1 et C2 (12, 14), qui contiennent des fibres dopées à l'erbium (44, 52) plus courtes que celles de l'unité d'amplificateur de bande L (16), sont allongées physiquement à l'aide de longueurs de fibre (70, 72) monomode, de sorte que le trajet de transmission optique de chaque unité d'amplificateur est généralement égal. Les unités d'amplificateurs (12, 16) comportent en outre des dispositifs de commande de temps de propagation (74, 76) qui commandent de manière sélective le temps de propagation des signaux traversant l'unité d'amplificateur respective (12, 16) pour assurer un réglage précis de la recombinaison de signaux.
