An improved process for recycling alkali cleaning solution, particularly suited for a steel processing facility. The process uses ultrafiltration technology that allows the spent alkali cleaning solution to be recycled on-line, at high temperatures and high pH. The ultrafiltration membranes required for the process are composed of rugged synthetic materials that are capable of being formed into asymmetric anisotropic non- cellulosic membranes, such as hollow fibre polysulfone. In addition, the process requires a cleaning solution and cleaning unit operating practices that are compatible with the ultrafiltration technology. The cleaning solution must be made up of components which will not unduly foul the membranes and would process through an ultrafiltration pore size that would allow the cleaner to be retained after treatment.
