Ultrafine iron-containing rutile type titanium dioxide particles useful for UV shielding cosmetics, pharmaceutical compositions and UV shielding paints are disclosed. They are rutile type crystalline titanium dioxide particles having an average single particle size of 0.01 to 0.1 µm and containing an iron component at a concentration of 1 to 15 % by weight as expressed as Fe based on the titanium dioxide in the crystalline structure. They can be produced by using a fine titanic sol comprising rutile crystallites as basic particles, precipitating iron oxide or hydrated iron oxide onto the surfaces of the titanic particles to effect coating, then firing and grinding.

Sont décrites des particules de dioxyde de titane à base de rutile contenant du fer ultra-fin, utilisables comme produits de beauté arrêtant les ultraviolets, compositions médicinales, matériaux de revêtement et ainsi de suite, présentant un diamètre monoparticulaire moyen de 0,01-0,1 mu m, et renfermant un constituant ferreux dans son grain cristallin en une quantité de 1-15 % en poids exprimés en Fe sur la base du dioxyde de titane. Le procédé de production consiste à revêtir la surface de dioxyde de titane d'une minuscule quantité de sol d'oxyde de titane possédant un noyau rutile comme particule de base, par dépôt d'un oxyde de fer ou d'un oxyde hydraté sur la surface, suivi d'une cuisson et d'une pulvérisation.
