ABSTRACT The invention relates to an ultrasonic array having the transducer elements arranged in lines and columns, the transducer elements being joined on both sides to opposing contact surfaces and switches being associated both with the contacts of the one contact surface and also with the contacts of the other contact surface, which switches serve to set preselectable emitting and/or receiving surfaces consisting of transducer elements during one emitting/ receiving cycle, more particularly for the purpose of dynamic focusing. The aim of the invention is to construct an ultrasonic array which requires only optimally low expenditure for switches and which, in this way, also allows the change-over, if required, to continuously varied aperture. This aim is achieved according to the invention by joining the transducer elements in groups with their one contact surface in the direction of the lines and with their other contact surface in the direction of columns and by associating at the most one single common line group switch with each line group and at the most one single common column group switch with each column group. It is easily possible to change to continuously variable aperture when continuously alterable switching elements, such as controllable resistances or the like, are used as emitting and/or receiving switches.
