ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION: An improved method and apparatus for the ensonification of at least a portion of a body part with acoustic energy pulses is disclosed. The present invention detects the amplitude of a resultant echo pulse, as well as the polarity sense of the pulse at peak amplitude. The amplitude and polarity measurements of the echo pulse are used to produce color intensity throughout the body part for each individual pixel element forming a color display. The detected polarity and amplitude information is averaged in order to obtain the best measure of color within each picture element comprising the display. Multiple lines of echo pulse trains are stored as image information and then displayed as a final image in a standard color television format thereby resulting in an improvement in resolution indicia of tissue character. The present invention also includes a method for detection of the amplitude and polarity of multi-cycle pulse echoes reflected from complex media. The improvement includes the steps of integrating each half-wave signal of the multi-cycle pulse echo and generating an absolute integral value signal corresponding thereto. A series of successive integral value signals are then compared to determine if a predetermined pattern among them exists. If a predetermined pattern is detected, a peak identification signal is then generated such that ultrasound echoes may be detected without de-convolutional signal processing in computation, and without the use of specialized acoustic pulse generators or transducers. The invention also includes an improvement in a method for displaying weighted transitions between ultrasound pulse echoes indicative of an acoustical interface and displaying the same on a color television display.
