Abstract of the Disclosure A pulse echo device in which a concave transducer partially surrounded by and insulated from an electrically grounded shield directs a three-dimensionally focused signal into a flowing fluid whereby particles therein can be detected with increased sensitivity, and whereby the compo- sition of the flowing fluid can be determined by detecting the signal echoes from the walls of the fluid conduit and measuring the amount of the attenuation of successive echoes or the sound velocity thereof.
