An ultrasonic pulse-echo system has a transducer for transmitting and receiving pulsed ultrasonic signals along a first transmission path and a multiple reflection system. The first transmission path is essentially parallel to a pipe wall to be examined. The multiple reflection system comprises a first reflection plane and a second reflection plane. The reflection planes define further transmission paths along which the beam originating from the transducer are projected onto the pipe wall at an angle, which in each case is greater than the critical angle of incidence so that the beam partly displaces further into the pipe wall. The two transmission paths are such that the two beams coincide in the region of the pipe wall. Reflections at the inner pipe wall surface from the path go back to the transducer by path and vice versa. The same applies for reflection at the outer wall surface, but not for reflections from cracks or flows.
