An on-line ultrasonic sensor for monitoring and sensing failure in a cutting tool insert. The preferred embodiment of the sensor includes a piezoelectric film of aluminum nitride (AIN) deposited onto a tool insert or tool insert seat with the AIN film electrically connected to a signal generator and detection circuitry. Avoltage pulse is applied to the AIN film to generate ultrasonic signal pulses in the AIN film which are transmitted through a tool insert to the vicinity of the cutting edge of the tool insert during use. Back-reflected ultrasonic signals from the edge of the tool insert induce a voltage signal in the piezoelectric film which is analysed and compared to signals characteristic of undamaged tool inserts. Temperature increases, wear and various types of tool failure can be readily detected during use of the insert with the sensor.
Cette invention concerne un capteur à ultrasons en ligne servant à détecter l'anomalie de fonctionnement d'un outil de coupe rapporté. Dans une variante privilégiée, le capteur se compose d'une pellicule piézoélectrique en nitrure d'aluminium (AlN) déposée sur la pièce rapportée de l'outil de coupe ou sur son siège, ladite pellicule étant raccordée électriquement à un générateur de signaux et à un circuit de détection. Une tension pulsée est appliquée à ladite pellicule pour y engendrer des signaux pulsés ultrasonores qui sont dirigés via la pièce rapportée vers l'arête de l'outil de coupe en cours d'utilisation. Les signaux ultrasonores réfléchis par l'arête de coupe engendrent une tension dans la pellicule piézoélectrique qui est analysée et comparée aux signaux caractéristiques d'une pièce rapportée intacte. L'objet de l'invention permet de détecter aisément les élévations de température, l'usure et diverses autres anomalies de fonctionnement de l'outil de coupe.
