A method of modelling a surface (3) of an object (2) using ultrasonic transducers (4, 5) mounted on the surface comprises the steps of: ~ providing a model of the surface, the model comprising a primary set of surface points indicative of the height of the surface, ~ transmitting pulsed waves from a first transducer (4) to one or more second transducers (5), the first transducer and each second transducer defining a respective path along the surface, ~ measuring travel times of the pulsed waves along each path, ~ calculating travel times based on the model of the surface, ~ adjusting the model of the surface in response to any discrepancies between the measured travel times and the calculated travel times, and ~ repeating the steps of transmitting, measuring, calculating and adjusting until the discrepancies are smaller than a predetermined threshold. The step of calculating the travel times comprises the sub-step of interpolating the primary set of surface points in order to obtain an expanded secondary set of surface points, the travel times being calculated using the expanded set. Thus the number of surface points to be determined is substantially reduced.

Un procédé de modelage d'une surface (3) d'un objet (2) utilisant des transducteurs à ultrasons (4, 5) montés sur la surface comprend les étapes consistant à : ~ fournir un modèle de la surface, le modèle comprenant un ensemble primaire de points de surface indicatifs de la hauteur de la surface, ~ transmettre des ondes pulsées d'un premier transducteur (4) à un ou plusieurs seconds transducteurs (5), le premier transducteur et chaque second transducteur définissant un chemin respectif le long de la surface, ~ mesurer les temps de trajet des ondes pulsées le long de chaque chemin, ~ calculer les temps de trajet sur la base du modèle de la surface, ~ ajuster le modèle de la surface en réponse à des différences entre les temps de trajet mesurés et les temps de trajet calculés, et ~ répéter les étapes de transmission, mesure, calcul et réglage jusqu'à ce que les différences soient inférieures à un seuil prédéterminé. La phase de calcul des temps de trajet comprend la sous-étape consistant à interpoler le kit primaire de points de surface afin d'obtenir un ensemble secondaire étendu de points de surface, les temps de trajet étant calculés en utilisant le kit étendu. Donc, le nombre de points de surface à déterminer est sensiblement réduit.
