A technique for separating a liquid from heterogeneous constituents therein, comprises the steps of providing a passage for a flow of liquid containing heterogeneous constituents and directing ultrasound waves into the passage in a direction opposite the flow, the ultrasound waves having sufficient power to exert a pressure on the constituents to impede the progress of the constitu- ents through the passage and to create 'cavitation' effects for the purpose of degassing the medium.
