ABSTRACT A web-seam closure is formed by ultrasonic welding in a gable top box fabricated from thermoplastic coated material. During welding, the areas to be welded are held together not only at the seam but also at a location between the seam and the side of the box. These areas are held together also during a subsequent cooling period. Thus, the resilience of the box material is prevented from opening the seam during or immediately after the welding operation. The anvil is preferably arched transversely of the seam so that softened thermoplastic material is squeezed out to form a bead along the inner edge of the seam.
