An ultrathin mesh optical panel and a method of use and making are disclosed. One embodiment of the optical panel includes a plurality of optical waveguides, wherein each optical waveguide is formed of a mesh material surrounding an optically clear core. The optical panel further includes a light generator. Each optical waveguide internally reflects the light incoming at the inlet of the waveguide to the outlet of the waveguide. The optical panel may optionally include a light redirecting coupling layer and/or a diffuser. An alternate embodiment of the ultrathin optical panel includes a plurality of optical waveguides, wherein the mesh material serves as the light transmissive material. A method of making and using is applicable to both major embodiments. A modification of either embodiment is disclosed wherein the optical waveguide is aligned to be non-perpendicular to the panel face.

L'invention concerne un panneau optique à maillage cellulaire ultra-mince et un procédé de réalisation correspondant. Selon une variante, le panneau comprend: plusieurs guides d'ondes optiques constitués chacun d'un matériau de maillage entourant un noyau optique transparent; et un générateur de lumière. Chaque guide d'ondes réfléchit vers la sortie du guide d'ondes la lumière arrivant à l'entrée du guide d'ondes. Le panneau peut éventuellement comprendre une couche de couplage à réorientation de la lumière et/ou un diffuseur. Selon une autre variante, le panneau comprend une pluralité de guides d'ondes optiques ultra-minces, et le matériau de maillage est utilisé comme matériau de transmission. L'invention concerne également un procédé de réalisation applicable aux deux variantes, lesquelles peuvent être modifiées lorsque le guide d'ondes optique est aligné pour ne pas être perpendiculaire à la face du panneau.
