There are provided an ultraviolet protective agent having a chemical composition represented by the following general formula (I): (ZnyM2+z)1-xM3+x O 1+x/2 (I) wherein M2+ is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ca, Ni and Cu; M3+ is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of A1 and Fe; and x, y and z each satisfy 0.2 ~ x ~ 0.4, (y + z ) - 1 and 0 ~ z ~ 0.75, and a sterilizer and a deodorizer which contain the compound of the above formula (I) as an effective component. The compound of the above formula (I) of the present invention is very effective in absorbing and screening ultraviolet light having a medium-wavelength (UV-B) which is harmful to living creatures, and has high visible light transmittance. Therefore, it is very useful as an additive to plastics, rubber, cosmetic materials, paint and the like. It can also be used as a sterilizer or deodorizer.
