Ultraviolet (UV) treatment for aqueous liquids such as water or biological fluids. In particular, the present invention involves the treatment of an aqueous liquid with UV light in which the liquid flows at ambient pressure and under the force of gravity during UV treatment. A process is described which includes passing the liquid by force of gravity through a treatment area and exposing the upper surface of the liquid to UV light emitted from a lamp spaced from the upper surface.
