ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is an unburned magnesia- carbon refractory comprising fine magnesia powder as a main constituent. If significantly differs from prior art refractories in that the maximum grain diameter of the fine magnesia powder is 1.5 mm and in that magnesia fine powder having a grain diameter of 0.3 to 1.5 mm comprises at most 30% by weight of the refractory raw materials. By so limiting the particle size, a refractory having high compactness is obtained, as indicated by a high bulk density and low air permeability. The refractory according to the present invention does not crack when subjected to pressure at the time of molding and has excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation.
