An undercoat composition with excellent adhesiveness to both a resin coating layer and a metal layer comprises (a) at least one resin selected from polyaryletherketone resins and polyphenylenesulfide resins having repeating units of the formulae: Image (I) Image (II) Image (III) (b) at least one resin selected from polyarylethersulfone resins with repeating units of the formulae: (IV) Image Image (V) (c) a thermosetting resin selected from imide resins and precursors thereof, epoxy resins, phenol resins, amide-imide resins and precursors thereof, and furan resins. Metal substrates coated with the undercoat composition and a resin composition are also provided. The undercoat composition and the resin-coated metal substrate offer excellent hot-water resistance and chemical resistance.
