ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An underlay in the form of a rectangular tile for supporting and positioning slates in constructing a roof. One end of the underlay defining an overlap portion for overlying the slates of the roof and directing moisture thereover. The underlay also including a tapered recess formation, which in the preferred embodiment is in the form of a plurality of tapered channels, for supporting the slates and for directing moisture to the overlap portion. The channels including at one end a shoulder formation presenting abutting surfaces which position the underlay and slates on the roof, conserving the number of slates used.
