ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A uni-directional/bi-directional sealing gate valve comprises a valve body with a float passage and a valve gate chamber intersecting the flow passage. A valve gate in the chamber controls fluid flow through the valve. The gate has a flow passage extending therethrough for cooperation with the body flow passage to permit fluid flow through the valve when the gate is in a first position. When the gate is in each of second and third positions, a device prevents fluid flow through the valve. A fluid tight seal is provided between the valve gate and the valve flow passage. A pressure relief is provided in the valve gate for permitting escape of pressure from the gate chamber into the body flow passage when the gate is in one of the second and third positions. The pressure relief prevents the pressure escape when the gate is in the other of the second and third positions. The gate valve is particularly useful in controlling flows of materials at elevated temperatures and pressures.
