ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Uniform distribution of fine particulate solid fuels in the calcining or uniflow shaft of a uniflow regenerative shaft furnace is achieved by arranging the outlet openings of fuel lances of the furnace with a uniform distribution over the cross section of the furnace shaft in a horizontal plane between the preheating zone and the calcining zone of the furnace. Solid fuel supplied through a fuel line is mixed with a gaseous carrier medium conveyed to the outlet openings. The fuel lances comprise a fuel tube surrounded by an outer tube which is connected to a supply line for a gaseous cooling medium. Fuel lances of the counterflow shaft which are not in operation are cooled in order to prevent entry of the combustion gases which are conveyed from the calcining shaft through a transfer duct into the counterflow shaft from which they are exhausted.
