In a continuous rolling mill in which discrete billets are rolled through a plurality of roll stands into successive product lengths having front and tail ends, a first of the roll stands is operated at a delivery speed that exceeds the take up speed of a successive second roll stand. Successive product lengths exiting the first roll stand are directed away from the mill pass line to a welding station, and from the welding station back to the mill pass line for continued rolling in the second roll stand. The front and tail ends of the successive product lengths are Welded together at the welding station.
