Case 5964 RDF/smk 1/25/89 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a biologically pure culture of a bacterium having ATCC number 53848, 53849, 538509 53851, 53852, 53853, a genetic equivalent thereof, or a mixture thereof. Also disclosed are substantially pure lipases which have maximal lipolytic activity between 20°C and 85°C at a pH between 8.0 and 11, where the lipase is produced from genetically active material substantially identical to the lipase-encoding genetic material of a microorganism capable of surviving and propagating in an environment of 100 ppm of 3,4-dichlorobenzoate. Also disclosed is a method of preparing the lipases from microorganisms, such as the claimed bacteria, lipase compositions, detergents, and a method of using the detergents.
