A B S T R A C T A data terminal comprises a base module and a portable module. The base module is provided with a receptacle into which the portable module can be plugged by a simple sliding action. A lock is provided to mechanically lock the portable module to the base module. The actuation of the mechanical lock also serves to actuate an electrical switch to connect or disconnect power to the portable module, and a circuit to retain power in the portable module in the event that the switch is actuated prior to the appropriate closure of any program being run so as to avoid loss of data. The receptacle is hinged to the base module, and a detector is incorporated to provide a signal indicative of the angle of inclination of the receptacle, which signal may be used to alter the contrast of a video display screen in the portable module. The display screen is allied with a touch screen. Drift and parallax are monitored continuously, determining vector differences between central key areas mapped onto the touch screen and the area of touch within a key area, which differences are sampled and averaged to establish statistical trends, and an appropriate offsetting signal is provided to the touchscreen controller.
