A universal coupling for coupling a positive displacement motor to an earth drilling assembly which includes a shaft having crowned polygons on each end and a universal housing having an internal flat-walled polygonal cavity so that the crowned polygon cooperates with the polygonal cavity to accomodate omnidirectional movement between the eccentric movement of the rotor and the drilling assembly for performance drilling and the combination of rotor eccentricity and off axis dislocation of the drilling assembly for use in horizontal or directional drilling applications. An adapter housing is provided which will accomodate the universal coupling movement for both types of drilling, connect the motor housing to the drilling assembly and provide the housing for the universal coupling's shaft.
