ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An equalizer has N resistor-reactor stages each pro- ducing one of N bumps, each bump adjustable in amplitude, and also in center frequency (the frequency at which the extreme- amplitude point of the bump lies). Each bump's center frequency is shiftable within a respective one of N successive limited fre- quency ranges, each defined by a minimum and maximum end frequency with a middle frequency midway therebetween. With any two adjoin- ing bumps adjusted such that their center frequencies lie at their middle frequencies, the center frequency of one bump can be shifted towards the middle frequency of the other by a distance at least equal to one half the distance from the middle frequency of the one bump to the middle frequency of the other. With any two ad- joining bumps set to equal amplitude, no matter what value, their adjoining flanks overlap and intersect at a point at least 0.6 of the way up their equal amplitudes. The N middle frequencies (which are fixed), contrasted to the N center frequencies (which are adjustable), are substantially equidistantly spaced along an unprecedented normalized-frequency axis the constituent sections of which have been expanded and compressed in correspondence to a new mathematical function, the density-of-detail distribution function, d*, wherein Image , k being a simple proportionality constant, and q being normalized frequency (f/fmax). -1-
