A universal guard for sharpening steels comprises a plate defining a central aperture and a pair of opposed and parallel arcuate arms extending inwardly from the disk into the central aperture for defining a receiving aperture suited for slidably receiving the longitudinal body of a sharpening steel with the arcuate arms resiliently securing the universal guard thereon. The receiving aperture is configured to allow the guard to be installed on steels having different shapes, such as elongated bodies having circular or substantially elliptical cross sections. Typically, the arms are made of a thermoplastic material which allows them to be heated at an appropriate temperature and then deformed so as to conform, once cooled, to the size or shape of the sharpening steel S.
