A method and apparatus for providing universal key security in a mechanical key access environment is disclosed. An electromechanical lock is provided for securing an enviromnent, whereby access is permitted through the steps of receiving a key in the lock, reading a first source of indicia from the key, wherein said first source of indicia comprises information or data specific to said lock, reading a second source of indicia, wherein the second source of indicia comprises information specific to the user of the key, and authorizing a use of the key based on both indicia readings. One embodiment involves the use of a biometric device within the key or on or near the lock, with one example of such a device being a fingerprint sensor. Another embodiment involves the use of added information, such as the entry of an individual PIN number by the user of the key.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un système de sécurité à clés universelles utiles dans un environnement auquel on accède par des clés mécaniques. Un verrou électromécanique permet d'assurer la sécurité d'un environnement, l'accès étant autorisé par la mise en oeuvre des étapes suivantes : recevoir une clé dans le verrou ; extraire une première source de signes de la clé, cette première source comprenant des informations ou des données spécifiques du verrou ; extraire une seconde source de signes, cette seconde source comprenant des informations spécifiques de l'utilisateur de la clé ; et autoriser l'utilisation de la clé sur la base de la lecture desdits signes. Dans un mode de réalisation, on utilise un dispositif biométrique se situant dans la clé, sur le verrou ou à proximité de celui-ci, le dispositif étant par exemple un détecteur d'empreintes digitales. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, on utilise des informations supplémentaires telles qu'un numéro NIP individuel introduit par l'utilisateur de la clé.
