ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bracket or adapter for a shelving system in which a single tab is used to provide a universal fit and a method for creating s shelving system with such a bracket to eliminate the need for inventorying a wide variety of brackets to fit the mounting supports of different manufacturers. The tab is provided with a notch and a curved ear so dimensioned that the notch will accommodate most commercially available pole wall thicknesses, and the ear will provide support against an inside wall of the pole over a wide variety of slot sizes. A flange on the bracket is provided with elongated slots to compensate for different shelving lengths.
