ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Image processing apparatus and methods adapted for use with a bilevel printer to reproduce mixed format documents including text, halftones and photographs. One image processing apparatus includes an input buffer means for storing pixels. For each pixel of interest, a gradient signal of surrounding pixels is generated. A plurality of signals representative of the previous pixel discrimination decisions is generated. A plurality of reflectance signals representative of the characteristic of pixels downstream from the pixel of interest is determined. A plurality of machine state signals representative of desired reflectance characteristics of a document is stored. A controller correlates the state signals, the history signals, the reflectance signals and the gradient signals to select an optimum thresholder for printing text or photographs. Another image processing apparatus including a "Defocused Symmetry Discriminator" which discriminates line copy information from nonline copy information by an examination of the symmetry characteristics of electronically "defocused" pixel video values, said discriminator being then coupled to the image processing apparatus of the previous paragraph, the result being further coupled to an "Information Homogeneity Discriminator" which makes a final determination of information type based on the homogeneity of information type within a macroscopic area. Another image processing apparatus includes within the apparatus of the first paragraph a "High Frequency Detector/Discriminator" which detects the presence of high frequency information and classifies it as either line copy (e.g. bar codes) or nonline copy (e.g. halftones).
