A patent for "Hydrostatic sidestick coupling" has been submitted (ref. Provisional Application Serial No. 60/148,134, filed August 10th, 1999 and Patent Application No. 09/616,479, filed July 14th, 2000) as a simple and cost effective concept to couple multiple pilot controls in a vehicle. This was based on a set of fluid filled metal bellow assemblies connected together with flexible tubing to provide motion copy between the pilot and,the co-pilot as well as spring rate and damping functions normally required in independent sidesticks. While the original patent describes concepts needed to allow coupling and de-coupling functions the present embodiments propose modifications such as the addition of elements to provide increased functionality that are particularly suitable in the context of aircraft operations. These are namely asymmetric: roll forces, autopilot backdrive, force override, disconnect, and fluid volume compensation. Additionally, an improvement to the sidestick mechanism is proposed.
