ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A heavy hydrocarbon crude oil is upgraded by treatment in a suspensoid heat soaking zone in the presence of inert solids and a hydrogen and carbon monoxide-containing gas. The carbonaceous residue which is formed during the heat soaking and which deposits on the solids is converted to a hydrogen and carbon monoxide-containing gas, a portion of which gas is recycled to the heat soaking zone.
