A pair of cross-country skis or alpine skis comprise ski bodies, binding assemblies, and substantially cylindrical climbing assemblies. The ski body has portions defining a hole. The climbing assembly comprises a casing, a stick having a pointed tip, a cover for receiving an external force from a ski pole in order to extend or retract the stick, a helical spring for providing compression and tension forces to the stick, and means for latching the stick at either a retracted position or an extended position with a ball-point pen mechanism. A first downward motion of the cover extends the stick in order to allow uphill climbing of the skis by preventing backward and lateral sliding of the skis on an inclined surface of snow. A second downward motion of the cover retracts the stick in order to resume sliding of the skis on a surface of snow. This invention relates to skis, and the principal use of the invention is for climbing a steep hill with cross-country skis or alpine skis.
