A display of a plurality of upholstery fabrics including patterns which are sofa scale patterns and chair scale patterns and colors including light neutral, dark neutral, pastel and jewel tone collections of hues includes a sample of each of the plurality of fabrics, the samples having apparently substantially equal dimensions and arranged in columns each made up of a subset of the plurality having a common dominant color element and the columns grouped in the display side by side from a light neutral edge across to a dark neutral edge, with the sofa scale patterns alternated with chair scalepatterns or plain fabrics in a column and in adjacent horizontal positions, not more than two chair scale patterns located together in a vertical column or in adjacent horizontal positions, with the dark end positioned so that it is not the first end seen by a person approaching the display, and the columns located in order from collections of light neutrals, to collections of pastels, to collections of jewel tones, to collections of dark neutrals, with the same order of collections of hues in the jewel tone collection repeated in the pastel collection, whereby adjacent fabrics are aesthetically compatible for upholstering items of furniture to be used in a common setting.
