ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel l-.beta.-D-arabinofuranosyl-5-(2-substituted vinyl) uracils or their alkyl esters wherein the 2-substituent is carboxyl or an alkoxycarbonyl, protected or not protected at their hydroxyls on their sugar moiety, (I), are disclosed, which uracil derivatives are produced by reaction of a l-.beta.-D-arabinofuranosyl-5-(halo or halomercury)-uracil, protected or not protected at its hydroxyls on its sugar moiety, (II or III), with an alkyl acrylate and, if desired, its subsequent hydrolysis. The uracil derivatives (I) in the form of a free acid or a salt with a cation, (Ic), are converted into l-.beta.-D-arabinofuranosyl-(E)-5-(2-halogenovinyl) uracils by halogeno-decarboxylation thereof.
