A process for the production Or urea starting from ammonia and carbon dioxide with a molar ratio NH3/C02 of from 5 : 1 to 8 : 1 comprising the synthesis and the de- composition of ammonium carbamate contained in the urea solution in two stages, the first using ammonia, and the second carbon dioxide as the stripping agents, wherein the synthesis and the decomposition in the first decom- position stage are carried out under a pressure equal, or substantially equal, and comprised between 180 and 250 bar whereas the decomposition in the second stage is carried out under a pressure of from 30 to 50 bars lower than the pressure in the first stage.
