The present invention relates to an assay for evaluating alveolar exchange of oxygen. A 13C-labeled substrate, such as13C-sodium bicarbonate is administered to a subject by oral or iv intake, and exhaled 13CO2 is measured. The 13CO2 in expired breath can be collected at various time points following administration of the substrate and measured in .DELTA. per mil with a mass analyzer or photometer, such as an IR spectrometer. This process can be used as a diagnostic test for the indication of, treatment and/or evaluation of the severity of respiratory tract diseases or infections.

L'invention concerne un dosage biologique permettant d'évaluer l'échange alvéolaire d'oxygène. Un substrat marqué ?13¿C, tel que le bicarbonate de sodium 13C est administré à un sujet par voie orale ou intraveineuse, puis le ?13¿CO¿2? est exhalé. Le 13CO2 présent dans l'air expiré peut être recueilli à différents moments suivant l'administration du substrat et peut être mesuré en .DELTA. par mile avec un analyseur de poids ou avec un photomètre, tel qu'un spectromètre IR. Ledit procédé peut s'utiliser comme test diagnostique pour indiquer, traiter et/ou évaluer la gravité de pathologies ou d'infections des voies respiratoires.
