The invention relates to the use in humans of a method which is based on the use of 4-galactosyl-xylose and which involves an alternative technique to determining xylose in urine. The method consists in measuring the concentration of xylose in the blood following the oral administration of 4- galactosyl-xylose to the patient, the use of said method being even more suitable in the case newborns. The invention also relates to the technology used for the in vivo evaluation of intestinal lactase activity, by way of a non-invasive test for the diagnosis of a deficiency of said enzyme, which consists in directly evaluating the overall activity of the enzyme in the individual and not in assessing the consequences of said deficiency. The inventive method does not require specialist equipment, does not cause any obvious discomfort to patients with a lactase deficiency and is extremely reliable, thereby eliminating the inconveniences of currently-used diagnostic tests.

L'invention concerne l'utilisation chez des humains d'une méthode fondée sur l'utilisation de 4-galactosyl-xylose faisant intervenir une technique alternative à la détection du xylose dans l'urine, consistant à mesurer la concentration du xylose dans le sang après administration par voie orale à un patient de 4-galactoxyl-xylose, cette méthode étant plus adaptée pour les test sur des nouveau-nés. L'invention concerne également une technologie d'évaluation in vivo de l'activité de la lactase intestinale, servant de test de diagnostic non invasif indiquant une déficience en lactase, reposant sur l'évaluation directe de l'activité globale de l'enzyme chez l'individu et non sur la mesure des conséquences de cette déficience. Cette méthode ne requiert aucun appareillage spécialisé, ne produit pas de désagréments apparents chez les patients présentant une déficience en lactase et est hautement fiable, éliminant ainsi les inconvénients liés aux tests de diagnostic utilisés actuellement.
