One aspect of the invention provides methods for producing cotyledonary pine embryos. The methods of the invention comprise the steps of: (a) culturing pre-cotyledonary pine somatic embryos in a development medium comprising abscisic acid and an adsorbent composition; and (b) culturing the pre-catyledonary pine somatic embryos treated in accordance with step (a) in a development medium that does not include abscisic acid to yield cotyledonary pine somatic embryos.
