ABSTRACT Disclosed is the use of: H-MetO2-Glu-His-Phe-D-Lys-Phe-X-(CH2)nCH3, wherein X is NH or O, and n is a positive integer ranging from 7 to 17 for the manufacture of a medicament having selective centrally acting nerve regeneration activity, but essentially no peripheral nerve regeneration activ- ity. Once manufactured, the medicaments may be used in the treatment of an animal suffering from central nerve degeneration or damage or may be used to determine the etiology of central versus peripheral nerve damage.
